Today we’re going to talk about clean eating! I have felt passionate about the quality level of the foods found in our grocery stores and restaurants for a long time. I just put it in the back of my mind and thought “oh, I’ll worry about that someday, we’re too busy right now and we need convenient.” Convenient isn’t healthy. Last year, my health was more in question than at any other point in my life which pushed me to declare health my word of the year. By choosing it, I intended to eat better, sleep better, exercise and relax more. While I have been eating less, I don’t know that I’ve been eating right. While doing Weight Watchers, you are encouraged to incorporate healthy fruits and veggies but it’s easy to get some sugary treats and snacks in there too. 4 smart points for an afternoon snack of Lucky Charms? Why not, right?
While I have been losing weight, I’m not really feeling healthier. I have been told for years that because of my interest in food production, I should watch Food, Inc. Well, I started watching it Friday night and have been watching food documentaries ever since. I was right, the food production process terrifies me. I barely ate a bite on Saturday because I was so disgusted by what we allow ourselves to put in our bodies. Now don’t think I’m all of a sudden going vegan and completely organic (although if I had a personal chef who could prep these meals for me I totally would eat completely clean and organic). I am, however, focusing on incorporating a lot more grass-fed and organic beef and poultry, more green vegetables and some fruit into our diets (but not too much because of sugar). I think the more of these types of foods that we add, the less we’ll eat of the processed food and it will feel a lot more natural than just cutting things out cold turkey.
When I’m eating mostly clean foods, my body does feel healthier. It’s because that’s the natural fuel our bodies are craving and were created to process. I know this, yet I have chosen to continue to eat foods that work against my own body. This weekend was a huge wake up call for me nutritionally. I will not be perfect and I’m sure will still have some processed foods from time to time but I am committed to being a lot more intentional with what I eat and choosing foods that truly nourish and fuel my body. I hate that processed food coma feeling and welcome the fresh mind and energy level that comes with a cleaner diet. We only get one life and one body and I need to to take better care of mine. I have a crazy schedule and can’t expect my body to keep up with it if I’m not feeding it the right foods and nutrients and taking care of it correctly.
If you have any clean, organic, vegetarian, vegan recipes that you love please send those to me! I am pinning clean eating meals that I am finding here if you want to follow along.
Have you watched many food documentaries? If not, I recommend it. We need to be more aware of how our food is produced and what chemicals we are freely ingesting without thinking about it. I’m thinking about doing another post sharing which documentaries I’ve watched and my thoughts on them. If you would be interested in that let me know in the comments!
